About the HEIF to PDF Converter

Convert .heif photos into PDF pages in your browser. HEIF is the ISO container — High Efficiency Image File Format — that Samsung, Canon and Nokia cameras and several Android exports write; HEIC is the same container carrying HEVC-coded images, which is why Apple’s files use that extension and why one decoder reads both. Add one photo or a batch, set the page size, margin and JPEG quality, and get one multi-page PDF or a separate PDF per photo. Each photo is decoded here and re-encoded as JPEG before it is placed on the page, because a PDF cannot embed HEIF image data directly. What is the difference between HEIF and HEIC?

HEIF is the container; HEIC is one way of filling it. High Efficiency Image File Format is the ISO standard that defines how images, thumbnails, metadata and auxiliary tracks are packed into a file. A .heic file is that container holding images coded with HEVC, which is what Apple devices write, and .avif is the same container holding images coded with AV1. Files that arrive with a plain .heif extension usually come from Samsung, Canon and Nokia cameras and from some Android exports. This page and the HEIC converter run the same decoder because there is one container to read either way; they are separate pages because the file you have is named one thing or the other, and searching for the wrong one should not be your problem.

What happens to a HEIF file holding more than one image?

Only the primary image becomes a PDF page. The container is genuinely multi-image — it can hold a burst, an image sequence, a thumbnail set, the extra frames behind a Live Photo, and auxiliary tracks such as a depth or alpha map — and the decoder here returns the file’s primary image, which is the one a photo viewer shows. The remaining frames and the auxiliary maps are not carried into the PDF. If you need every frame of a sequence, export them as separate files from the app that produced them and convert those.

Why is the photo re-encoded rather than embedded as it is?

Because PDF has no HEIF image filter. The format’s image types are things like DCTDecode for JPEG and FlateDecode for lossless raster data; there is no entry for HEVC- or AV1-coded pictures, so no reader would know what to do with the bytes. Each photo is therefore decoded and written as JPEG before it goes on the page, and the quality slider controls that one pass. Keep it high for anything you intend to print; lower it when you are batching many photos and the file size matters more than fine detail.

Will Windows or a web form accept the PDF when it rejected the HEIF?

That is usually the reason people are here. HEIF support outside the device that wrote the file is still patchy: Windows needs codec extensions from the Microsoft Store before Photos will open one, plenty of upload forms reject the extension outright, and older document systems have never heard of it. A PDF opens in every browser, every phone and every document system, which is why converting is the shortest route to a file the other side can actually read.

Are my files uploaded when converting HEIF to PDF?

No. The .heif files are decoded by JavaScript running in this tab and assembled into a PDF there, with no upload step at any point. Two consequences worth knowing: the conversion still works with the page loaded and your connection switched off, and because each photo is redrawn onto a canvas before being embedded, EXIF fields such as the camera model, the timestamp and the GPS coordinates do not survive into the PDF.
